40 LOVE Fan Favorite Moments: No.5
Kim Clijsters

This week, in celebration of the WTA's 40th anniversary, wtatennis.com will be counting down the top five moments of the last 40 years, as voted for by you, the fans.

In at No.5 is Kim Clijsters' 2009 US Open triumph. In just her third tournament since returning from a two-year sabbatical, the Belgian overcame all logic - and a treacherous draw - to become the first mother since Evonne Goolagong-Cawley in 1980 to win a major.

It was Clijsters' second Slam, after her victory in New York four years earlier, and with wins over both Williams sisters, Li Na and Caroline Wozniacki, no one could say she had not earned it. Her very own fairytale of New York even had a feel-good ending when her 18-month-old daughter, Jada, toddled onto court to join in the trophy presentation.

Here's what you had to say about it…

My favorite WTA Moment was when Kim Clijsters brought her daughter, Jada, onto court at the 2009 US Open following her Grand Slam victory. Who says moms can't have it all?

Kim's comeback win at the US Open in '09 was just the perfect example of pure desire, grit and love of the game. From the first round you could see she was determined but relaxed at the same time. Watching her road to the title made me learn just how much you can accomplish if you just throw yourself to the challenge and take your chances, no matter the conditions. Definitely one of WTA's most memorable and formidable moments.

The second career of Kim Clijsters was amazing. It started from the US Open 2009 when she became the first wildcard champion in her third tournament since coming out of retirement, and two other major titles later. Her passion for tennis and her love to the family makes her a true champion.

No doubt in my mind, my favourite WTA moment is Kim Clijsters winning the 2009 US Open and seeing her cherish the moment with her family. It made it all the more special considering the fact that she was only playing her third tournament back after a two-year retirement. I already knew she was a great champion, but never thought that she would come back and play such spectacular tennis to beat the likes of the Williams sisters en route to her second Grand Slam singles title. With that US Open victory, Kim showed me that anything is possible to accomplish, even if it is out the imagination. With that saying, I thank her for all the wonderful memories she has given me from the time I first saw her play.
