40 LOVE Fan Favorite Moments: No.4
Amanda Coetzer, Monica Seles

This week, in celebration of the WTA's 40th anniversary, wtatennis.com will be counting down the top five moments of the last 40 years, as voted for by you, the fans.

In at No.4 is Monica Seles' comeback. Two years after her stabbing in Hamburg, Seles made her eagerly anticipated return to competitive tennis during the 1995 summer hardcourt season.

Ahead of her first event back, in Toronto, many questioned whether, after such a harrowing ordeal, and so long on the sidelines, she would be able to recapture her former dominance. Seles' answer was spectacular, dismantling a draw that contained four of the world's Top 5 to take home the title.

A few weeks later she reached the final at the US Open. And while her great rival, Steffi Graf, had not read the script, denying her in a topsy turvy final, Seles did not have to wait long to taste Grand Slam success, winning the Australian Open at the start of the following season.

Here's what you had to say about it…

When Monica Seles returned to the game, it was her performances that gave me a 'LOVE' for Tennis :) She had mentioned in an interview that there were not too many fans there to walk with her from the clubhouse to center court at the US Open, so I made sure I was there for her next match. I told her, "I'm here for you, Monica!" Then came that famous Monica giggle! What a great memory :)

For me, it is definitely Monica's comeback in 1995.

When Seles returned to the tour in August 1995 after her tragedy, that was a special moment in tennis.

My favorite WTA moment is the return of Monica Seles to tennis in 1995. She inspired so many active tennis players, so she definitely deserves the place in the WTA list of favorite moments.
