No.1 Spotlight: Ana Ivanovic
Ana Ivanovic

As a teenager in war-torn Yugoslavia, Ana Ivanovic practiced in the early morning to avoid bomb raids. When all the courts were destroyed, she famously used an abandoned swimming pool.

Yet from such inauspicious beginnings was born one of modern tennis' great talents. After a bright junior career, Ivanovic, now representing Serbia, broke through in the senior ranks in 2005, winning her first title and reaching the quarterfinals at the French Open.

Three years later, she left Paris as champion and with the World No.1 ranking to boot. Since then, she has struggled to maintain form, at one stage falling out of the Top 50, but in the last few years she has shown flashes of greatness, clawing her way back to within touching distance of a Top 10 return.

• Among her 11 WTA titles was a triumph at the 2008 French Open, after which she became the first Serb to ascended to World No.1. Also a two-time Grand Slam runner-up
• Her first WTA title came as a qualifier at Canberra in 2005
• Won US Open Series in 2006
• Member of Serbian Fed Cup team in 2006, 2008-2013 and Serbian Olympic team in 2012
• Won WTA's Most Improved Player Award in 2005 and 2007
• Won WTA's Karen Krantzcke Sportsmanship Award in 2007
• Won WTA's Diamond Aces Award in 2008
• Was named UNICEF National Ambassador to Serbia in 2007
