NEW YORK, NY, USA - While her singles credentials were excellent - she reached four WTA finals, three at Premier-level events, and made it as high as No.8 - Anna Kournikova's crowning moments mostly came on the doubles court, the biggest one of them all at the WTA Championships in 1999.

Throughout the regular season she was one of the best doubles players in the world - she won four WTA doubles titles, including her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open and Premier-level titles at Indian Wells, Rome and Eastbourne. Going into the WTA Championships that year Kournikova and Martina Hingis were No.4 and No.5 in the world, respectively - things can change quickly, though.

After a pair of air tight wins in their first two matches, 16 61 75 over Alexandra Fusai and Nathalie Tauziat and 46 76(7) 60 over Lisa Raymond and Rennae Stubbs, Hingis and Kournikova were brilliant in a 64 64 win over Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario and Larisa Neiland to win the WTA Championships.

And with that result, Hingis went from No.5 to No.2 and Kournikova from No.4 to No.1 on November 22, 1999 - the first and so far only Russian, male or female, to reach No.1 in the world in doubles.

Four other Russians have reached No.1 in singles - Yevgeny Kafelnikov (No.1 on the ATP World Tour on May 3, 1999), Marat Safin (No.1 on the ATP World Tour on November 20, 2000), Maria Sharapova (No.1 on the WTA on August 22, 2005) and Dinara Safina (No.1 on the WTA on April 20, 2009).

Kournikova is still the only one to do it in doubles - and it happened at the WTA Championships.
