Hello from Memphis!
This is my first time writing for the WTA's blog, and I'm really excited about it! I've read some of the previous blogs done by Lisa Raymond, Petra Kvitova and many others, so I have some high expectations to live up to! Thanks for setting the bar so high girls, ugh! ;)
This is my second time in Memphis; I came last year to play in the qualifying. It's kind of crazy though because one full year later I'm seeded at this tournament! It's my first time ever being seeded in a WTA main draw, so I am totally stoked to say the least. I also played my first round match today against Jamie Hampton and won, 64 61. I'm pretty happy with the match, there are a few things I would like to tweak before the next round, but overall I think I did well considering I only arrived yesterday. I was playing a tournament in Midland, Michigan and consequently I had to bust my butt to get down here. Not that I mind of course, this is a fantastic tournament! And I must say the weather down here is much warmer than up north!
I also have to give a shout out to a very special day that is near and dear to our hearts: Valentine's Day. And yes that pun was very much intended (I couldn't help myself, it was too easy!) I know certain parts of the world celebrate this more than others, but I want to wish you all a "Happy Valentine"! Although I suppose one does not really need a day to express more love than usual, it should really be all year long! Anyways, I'll keep it short on the mushy gushy stuff here, but I'm just wondering how you spend your day? Was it with anyone special? Or if you're like me just on your own... *sniff sniff*... haha I'm joking, no sympathy needed here, I'm perfectly content! Just give me a litre of maple syrup, a few chocolates, and I'm good to go!
I'm trying to come up with a list of things to do while I'm in Memphis; I didn't have time to do anything last year. So far I've thought of visiting Graceland (the infamous home of Elvis) and also going to eat at Corky's BBQ. Two very different activities, I know, but both are of interest to me! The drive from the hotel to the tennis centre has a route that causes us to always drive in front of Corky's, which I've heard is amazing, so it's been stuck in my mind for the past 24 hours. And if you have any suggestions for other things to do in Memphis let me know, I would love to hear it!
Signing off for the night!
Rebecca
P.S. If you saw my Ninja Turtles/Power Rangers nails from a while ago... well I'm thinking of doing Pokémon nail polish on my fingernails next... is that just too far out?
