When you're British, people are always teasing you about how bad the weather is here and when you get days like Tuesday in Birmingham, you can't really blame them.
I was due to play my first round match at the AEGON Classic against Kaia Kanepi of Estonia but the weather had other ideas and apart from a light hit indoors I spent most of the day either sitting in the players' lounge chatting or popping outside to look at the sky. It rained for most of the day but it cleared up late in the afternoon and that meant a strange situation where my coach Nino and I had no idea whether I was going to play or not.
At around six thirty, even though the sky looked quite threatening, Kaia and I were called to the court and I was ready to play but I think we were both wondering whether we'd get to hit a ball or not. As it was the rain started almost as soon as we'd put our racquet bags down and we were no sooner on court than off it again and done for the day.
If I'm being honest, it was a bit of a relief to get another night of rest because I wasn't feeling well on Sunday after picking up sunstroke in Nottingham. I had to play my quarters and semis in hot conditions on Friday, then played the final on Saturday and by that evening I was feeling pretty bad. I spent Sunday in bed and couldn't eat anything and though I'm fine now, my stores of energy have been a bit low. An extra night's sleep, a good dinner and a nutritious breakfast and I'll be that bit more recovered.
It's not often tennis players are happy to see the rain fall but every so often it can be a bit of a blessing. I'll say that next time someone teases me about the British weather!
