Andrea Petkovic's Pune Blog: Thursday

From the Divali party to the US elections, Andrea Petkovic covers it all in her latest blog from Pune, India.

Published November 08, 2012 12:00

PUNE, India - Don't let her current ranking fool you - Andrea Petkovic is a top player, through and through. In the Top 10 to start the year, she was struck with two major injuries that kept her out most of the season - but now she's healthy, reached the semifinals of her last event in Luxembourg, and has come to the new WTA $125 tournament in Pune hoping to gather even more steam.

The German star is also bringing us the latest WTA Blog this week. Read on!

First let me catch you up on yesterday. I didn't have any matches so after I practiced I just relaxed and then later they had the Diwali party here, which is the "festival of lights". They put so much effort into it and did such a great job. When I came here I was really looking forward to seeing the Indian culture. It was nice to wear the saree - that was actually my big dream coming here! I also wanted to get henna, and maybe I'll get a chance to do that in the coming days. But about the party, I just felt really Indian, and being a part of the festival was so amazing. All the lights and fireworks - it was a little dangerous, I have to say, I had to keep my distance at times! But I was really impressed, as always.

The dancing was absolutely incredible. There was one guy who climbed the roof and jumped down from it, and I was like, 'What the hell is happening here?' It was absolutely amazing. And then he danced with us. I'm glad he didn't try to make me jump from the roof. But it was all great fun and they were amazing.

Today I had my second round match against Chang Liu from China. No matches are ever easy, unfortunately, but I was really happy and satisfied with the way I played today. I was sharp on every point and very intense, and if I can play point by point and stay focused throughout a whole match, my chances are definitely high. So I'm definitely satisfied with the way I played. Also, like I said last time, it's tough playing opponents you don't know at all, so you have to be on your toes all the time and really focused, and that's what I did today.

I also have to mention the US elections - I'm so happy, I'm such a big Barack Obama fan, and when I heard he was re-elected, it was the biggest stone off my heart. I was so, so happy. I'm such a big fan of him. I think he's the better man, not only for the United States, but for the world in general, and I was really happy and relieved. And I'm more on the liberal side, obviously!

Time for some fan questions and then we'll talk again tomorrow!

Who are your best friends on the tour? Michal, Poland
My best friends are definitely the Germans and the Serbians, which means Julia Goerges, Angelique Kerber - we practice together and are very close. And Sabine Lisicki obviously. And then the Serbian girls, Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic - when we see each other we always go for dinner and catch up. Julia is my what's up buddy - we talk every day almost!

Have you decided your schedule for 2013? Ricardo, México
It's going to be tough for me because my ranking has dropped since January, so I'll have to make a new plan and will have to be spontaneous. But I'd really love to go to South America - there's going to be a new tournament there in 2013, and that's one of my goals, to go to South America.

Where do you learn your dance moves? Sue, USA
I've been practicing for a long time...... just kidding. They are very spontaneous. I'm not even sure they're any good. But even if I'm not good at it, I love it!!
