She dropped her opener in Birmingham and split two matches in Eastbourne, but Spain's Garbiñe Muguruza found her grass court groove on the Wimbledon lawns, reaching her maiden major final and becoming her country's first Wimbledon finalist since 1996.
Muguruza joined a select group of only five players born in the 1990s to reach a Grand Slam final during the Wimbledon fortnight, and rose to a career-high ranking of No.9 for her efforts. The 21-year-old also claimed two more Top 10 wins at Wimbledon to improve her record against the WTA's elite to 5-4 this season.
All of that earned Muguruza some very high praise from a former Grand Slam winner at Wimbledon.
"For me if Muguruza doesn't win it this year, she's going to win this tournament or another Grand Slam at some point," said 2013 Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli, after she defeated Agnieszka Radwanska in the semifinals. "She's not waiting, she's going and getting it, and that's the only way you can lift a Grand Slam trophy."
