Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina have teamed up in Fed Cup as far back as 2008, but didn't become a regular pairing until 2012. Success came quickly after that, most notably with Premier-level titles in Beijing and Moscow to close out the season.
2013 was even better, highlighted by more Fed Cup wins while representing Russia, a deep run at the Australian Open, another Premier title at Indian Wells and their first Grand Slam title at the French Open, where they did not drop a set all fortnight, including in the final against defending champions and top-ranked duo Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci.
"We have been together since last year, and I think we are a good team," Vesnina said. "We understand each other pretty good and have a lot of confidence right now.
"We've had some good wins this year and also last year, so maybe this win has brought us some confidence. And we were playing really good today in the final."
"I'm so happy that we played so solid today and played exactly how we wanted to," Makarova said. "We kept all the time to our game strategy and it worked today really well. It's a great feeling to win our first Grand Slam."
Makarova and Vesnina's memorable 2013 resulted in their clinching a berth in the season-ending WTA Finals for the first time, beating Errani and Vinci again en route to a runner-up showing. Their 2014 has been highlighted by their second Grand Slam title at the US Open, leading to them qualifying for the WTA Finals for the second straight year.
All but one of Makarova's WTA doubles titles have come alongside Vesnina, while Vesnina has had success with several other players - most notably capturing Indian Wells with Dinara Safina in 2008 and with Sania Mirza in 2011.
