Unseeded Chan Yung-Jan and Zheng Jie defeated the No.1 ranked team in the world - Cara Black and Liezel Huber - 76(5) 62, in quarterfinal action. In a wild first set, unseeded Chan and Zheng took a 5-3 lead and eventually survived a tie-break in which they fell behind, 4-0. Then, on serve at 2-1 down in the second, the Asians reeled off five straight games to secure the victory. Black and Huber have now failed to go beyond the final eight in three appearances together at Indian Wells.

Chan and Zheng, who have yet to lose a set this week, are playing in just their third Sony Ericsson WTA Tour event together, but their results have been impressive, as they reached the quarters in Dubai in February and won Kuala Lumpur the following week. Their semifinal opponents in Indian Wells will be their conquerors in Dubai, unseeded Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik.

Peschke and Srebotnik had a dramatic match of their own Tuesday, surviving Maria Kirilenko and Agnieszka Radwanska in a match tie-break, 46 76(4) 10-5. Peschke and Srebotnik's runner-up showing in Dubai last month is their best result in four career events together.

The bottom half of the draw's quarterfinal matches will be played Wednesday, with second-seeded Nuria Llagostera Vives and María José Martínez Sánchez playing sixth-seeded Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Yan Zi and third-seeded Nadia Petrova and Samantha Stosur taking on unseeded Iveta Benesova and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova.
