Getting To Know... Sachia Vickery
Sachia Vickery

STANFORD, CA, USA - While her surprise run may have come to an abrupt halt at the hands of Varvara Lepchenko in the quarterfinals, Sachia Vickery did her reputation - and ranking - no harm with her showing at this week's Bank Of The West Classic.

Vickery first caught the eye in her early teens, drawing favorable comparisons with her childhood hero, Serena Williams. Judging by her victories over Zhang Shuai and Monica Puig in Stanford, the American now looks ready to fulfill that early potential.

When did you start playing tennis?
SV:
I started when I was six. I just sort of fell into it and since the first day I picked up a racquet I've loved it.

Can you tell us a little bit about your family?
SV:
I have a brother - who plays football for South Carolina State - he's 21 and his name's Dominique. My mom's an online adviser at Kaplan and my dad is a fitness trainer.

Who coaches you and how long have you been working together?
SV:
I work with Kathy Rinaldi at the USTA, she's one of the biggest, most important people in my life in terms of building my confidence.

How would you describe your playing style and what are your strengths?
SV:
I think I move well, I have a decent serve, my forehand's good, I like my backhand!

Did you have a tennis idol growing up?
SV:
Yeah, Serena's always been my idol. I've idolized her since I first started playing tennis - she's one of the reasons I started playing. Also, Venus, Hingis and Clijsters.

What's your best tennis memory so far?
SV:
Definitely this tournament! It's the best week I've had in my career so it kind of has to be this!

Who has been your toughest opponent to date?
SV:
Well, definitely someone here. The match against Puig was one of the toughest I've played in my career and then in the first round I played Zhang Shuai and she was in the Top 30. So definitely the two toughest opponents I've faced were in this tournament.

What are your goals in tennis?
SV:
Just to be one of the best players in the world and to maximize my potential the best I can.

What's your favorite surface and tournament?
SV:
Favorite surface is probably clay and favorite tournament is the US Open.

How far did you go in your education?
SV:
I graduated high school, and I'm going to take college courses online. I'm going to study marine biology - not right now, since I'm obviously too busy, but definitely in a while.

What do you like to do for fun?
SV:
I like rollerblading, and I go to the movies with my best friend Sasha.

Do you have a favorite movie or musician?
SV:
Favorite movies I would say are The Breakfast Club, Save the Last Dance, Remember the Titans. Singers? Nicki Minaj is my favorite, I love Katy Perry, Eminem.

If you could describe yourself in one word, what would it be?
SV:
Spontaneous.

If you could meet one person in the world, who would it be?
SV:
Kevin Hart.

If you weren't a tennis player, what career would you have chosen?
SV:
I think if I didn't play tennis, because I'm not really good at any other sport, I would have studied marine biology.
