TOKYO, Japan - Three of the Top 6 seeds were ousted on Monday and it was the other three's turn to fall on Tuesday, as Elena Dementieva, Caroline Wozniacki and Vera Zvonareva all lost their openers to complete a Top 6 wipeout at the Toray Pan Pacific Open.
Tokyo: Tuesday Highlights
Sixth seed Zvonareva was the first to go, losing to Alisa Kleybanova, 36 64 62. Kleybanova now has four Top 10 wins to her name, all coming this year.
Third seed Dementieva followed her to the sidelines, losing out to another giant-killer, Kateryna Bondarenko, 62 67(3) 61. Dementieva found herself down triple match point at 26 45, serving at 0-40; she fought back to take the match to a third set, but Bondarenko closed out her own fourth Top 10 win.
"I was focusing on every point and after the second set I was still on the court so I had to keep playing," Bondarenko said. "It was very difficult but I had to refocus and stay calm. I'm a little tired from the match but I feel great."
Fourth seed Wozniacki fell under somewhat different circumstances, retiring from her match against Aleksandra Wozniak due to a viral illness at 0-5.
"I've been feeling sick since before I left home," Wozniacki said. "Although I thought I could play, every time I did my heart rate went up and I'd feel dizzy. I tried my best and am disappointed I had to retire. There are still a few tournaments left, though, and I'll give my 100% for Beijing."
Top seed Dinara Safina, second seed Venus Williams and fifth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova all lost their opening matches on Monday.
Jelena Jankovic and Victoria Azarenka, the No.7 and No.8 seeds, kept the dream alive for the favorites, however. Jankovic rallied past Germany's Sabine Lisicki, 63 46 62, while Azarenka blew past Chinese star Zheng Jie, 61 61.

There were mixed results for the lower seeds in action, with Maria Sharapova beating No.12 seed Samantha Stosur, 60 61, and Magdalena Rybarikova beating No.13 seed Nadia Petrova, 62 62, but No.11 seed Agnieszka Radwanska, No.14 seed Marion Bartoli and No.15 seed Li Na advancing into the round of 16.

Sharapova, the only former Tokyo champion left in the draw, needed only 57 minutes to dispatch Stosur, building a 60 50 lead and holding two match points in that game before Stosur got on the board; but it didn't matter as Sharapova served it out at love anyway, finishing it off with her seventh ace of the match.
"I just try to improve as each tournament goes, playing one match at a time and focusing on the task ahead," said Sharapova, who hit only one double fault in the match. "When you don't play well you have to learn to get better. It's the first time I've had to make adjustments to my game and relearn the things that usually came so automatically. I want to finish the season on a good note."
Elena Vesnina, Iveta Benesova and Lucie Safarova also moved through.
