Sunday, Fourth Round
Rod Laver Arena
[11] Kim Clijsters (BEL #14) vs. [5] Li Na (CHN #6)
Head-to-head: Clijsters leads 5-2
On Sunday, the Rod Laver Arena will play host to a repeat of last year's final, as crowd favorite Kim Clijsters takes on Li Na. Twelve months ago, Clijsters overcame a slow start to win an enthralling match in three sets. Li bounced back from this disappointment by winning her first Grand Slam at Roland Garros less than five months later, and judging by her first week performaces is ready to repeat the trick at Melbourne Park. Clijsters appears to be running into form at just the right time too, shaking off any last remnants of early-season ring rust with an emphatic 63 62 win over Daniela Hantuchova in the third round. Both players are evenly matched from the back of the court, and their flair for shot making could make this an early contender for match of the tournament.
[1] Caroline Wozniacki (DEN #1) vs. [13] Jelena Jankovic (SRB #13)
Head-to-head: Jankovic leads 4-3
In the lead up to the Australian Open much of the talk surrounding Caroline Wozniacki concerned her battle to cling on to her World No.1 spot. And the 21-year-old Dane has responded in fine fashion, seeing off her first three opponents with minimum fuss. Sterner tests lie ahead, though, starting with former Melbourne semifinalist Jelena Jankovic. After a tough 2011, in which she failed to make much impression at any of the majors, Jankovic has shown she is far from finished by inflicting crushing defeats on two of the WTA's young pretenders, Laura Robson and Christina McHale, in the first week. Whether these performances have installed in her the belief to end a three-match losing streak against Wozniacki remains to be seen, but by keeping time on court to a minimum she has boosted her chances in a clash where fitness could be just as important as shot making.
Also on court…
First up on Rod Laver will be one of the pre-tournament favorites, Victoria Azarenka, who faces Iveta Benesova. The day's other fourth round match sees Agnieszka Radwanska take on Julia Goerges as she bids to reach the quarterfinals for the second year in succession. In the doubles competition, defending champions Gisela Dulko and Flavia Pennetta play the dangerous unseeded pairing of Svetlana Kuznetsova and Vera Zvonareva.
