Sloane Stephens will face Aranta Rus for the first time, but has a strong pedigree at Acapulco, where she was the champion in 2016.
It will also be the first meeting between Kristina Mladenovic and Beatriz Haddad Maia. The Frenchwoman, the No.2 seed this week, reached the final here 12 months ago but lost in straight sets to Lesia Tsurenko, who she could meet in the quarterfinals.
No.3 seed Daria Gavrilova's match with wildcard Renata Zarazúa is yet another encounter between two players who have never previously met. The 20-year-old Mexican may be the home favorite, but at WTA World No.253, she is ranked over 220 spots behind the Australian, who is WTA World No.26. This is Gavrilova's first time playing at Acapulco.
Zhang Shuai has not played in Acapulco since retiring hurt from the 2014 semifinal, when she led Dominika Cibulkova 4-2 in the first set.
Lesia Tsurenko is the defending champion. She did not drop a set as she won the title last year. She also won in straight sets in her only previous meeting with Arina Rodionova.
