MEMPHIS, TN, USA - The first round wrapped up and the second round began at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships & the Cellular South Cup on Tuesday, with Top 2 seeds Caroline Wozniacki and Victoria Azarenka both winning their respective matches easily in straight sets.
Wozniacki had yet to play her first round and waited until the evening session to do so, but was in phenomenal form once she got there, crushing Jelena Dokic in a rematch of their Australian Open third round, 61 62. Seeded No.1 this week, Wozniacki needed just 48 lethal minutes to exact revenge for the aforementioned loss to Dokic, a qualifier into this week's singles main draw.
"She's a really good player and I lost to her in Australia, but it's so much different playing her in Australia," Wozniacki said. "Not just the crowd but the difference between outdoors and indoors, and I played much better this time. Also, this time I knew what to expect from her - she hits the ball very, very hard."
"It was different circumstances today, you can't really compare it to our last match," Dokic said. "I made it through the qualies, beat some girls I should be beating at this stage, so I'm happy. I made too many errors today, I didn't really give myself a chance. She's a really good player. I still feel her game suits me though, so I look forward to playing her again sometime in the future."
The first three second round matches also took the court, with No.2 seed Victoria Azarenka crushing Stéphanie Cohen-Aloro, 62 62; No.5 seed Marina Erakovic rallying past wildcard Melanie Oudin, 46 62 63; and Michaella Krajicek, a qualifier, cruising through a third set tie-break to beat Kristina Barrois, 63 36 76(0).
The remaining second round singles matches will all take the court Wednesday, including Wozniacki's match-up with the talented Brémond.
