ACAPULCO, México - Wednesday was a very mixed day indeed for the seeds at the Abierto Mexicano TELCEL presented by HSBC, with three of them biting the dust on the red clay of the International event.

Carla Suárez Navarro was the first to go, falling to Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, 64 75. Suárez Navarro, the third seed, seemed to be on her way to a third set as she raced to a 5-1 lead in the second set, but a fiery Zahlavova Strycova quickly regained control of the match, taking six straight games to eliminate the Spaniard in staight sets.

Gisela Dulko and María José Martínez Sánchez, the No.5 and No.8 seeds who played for the Bogotá title last week (with Martínez Sánchez winning), followed Suárez Navarro to the sidelines. Dulko had a set point in the first set tie-break of her match but wound up falling in straight sets to Maret Ani, 76(6) 63. Martínez Sánchez seemed on her way to an easy win over Petra Cetkovska, up 63 42 with triple break point for 63 52, but the Czech roared back to prevail, 36 64 61.

The other two seeds playing in the day session both won, but while second seed Flavia Pennetta needed just 62 minutes to beat Pauline Parmentier, 61 63, fourth seed Iveta Benesova battled for more than two hours to dismiss fellow Czech Klara Zakopalova in a third set tie-break, 46 64 76(3).

In the only match of the day between unseeded players, Agnes Szavay came back from 5-2 down in the first set to beat Italy's Roberta Vinci, 76(1) 64.

At night, top seed Venus Williams became the last player into the quarterfinals, getting past qualifier Greta Arn in another tight one, 63 67(3) 64. It was her second straight three-setter of the week, having beaten Nuria Llagostera Vives in her first round match on Tuesday evening, 64 46 62. Both of her vanquished opponents have won Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles titles on red clay before.

Mathilde Johansson reached the quarterfinals on Tuesday, when No.7 seed Tathiana Garbin withdrew the night before due to an abdominal strain.

All four quarterfinals will take to the dirt Thursday, with semifinals scheduled for Friday and the final for Saturday.
