MARBELLA, Spain - After the shock exit of top seed Serena Williams on Wednesday, order was restored to the clay courts of Marbella on Thursday, as all of the seeds in action made safe passage into the quarterfinals of the $500,000 Andalucía Tennis Experience. Aside from the world No.1, the only seed missing from the final eight list is No.8 seed Tsevtana Pironkova, who also fell in the first round.

First through on Thursday was new tournament favorite and second seed Jelena Jankovic, who began her match against Tunisian lucky loser Selima Sfar with an ace, but nonetheless dropped her opening service game and was soon down 2-0. But the former world No.1 quickly found her range and lost just one more game as she converted five of 11 break points to romp through the match, 63 60.

Currently sitting at No.4, Jankovic is ranked 17 places higher than the next seed in the event, Kaia Kanepi, but there is some serious claycourt talent left in the field, the tall Estonian not least among them. After closing out a tight first set against Dutch qualifier Arantxa Rus, Kanepi, a quarterfinalist at Roland Garros last year, powered home, 75 62. She faces Sorana Cirstea in the last eight; the seventh-seeded Romanian booked her place in the quarters with a three set win over Andreja Klepac on Wednesday.

Also through to the quarters are No.5 seed Carla Suárez Navarro, who recovered from a dire start to wear down Russian qualifier Ekaterina Ivanova, 06 63 60, and No.6 seed Sara Errani, who held off a late surge by Slovenian qualifier Polona Hercog to prevail in a second set tie-break, 60 76(7).

Serena's vanquisher, Klara Zakopalova, let fellow Czech Renata Voracova back into their match late in the second set, but recovered her composure to advance, 76(7) 57 60. The 27-year-old faces Suárez Navarro in the quarters.

Friday's other quarterfinals at the International series event pitch Errani against Anabel Medina Garrigues, and Jankovic against Roberta Vinci, who beat Nicole Vaidisova on Wednesday.

In the doubles, Medina Garrigues and Virginia Ruano Pascual remain on course for their first title of the year, after edging Vinci and Francesca Schiavone to reach the semis, 62 67(6) 105. The second-seeded Polish duo of Klaudia Jans and Alicja Rosolska also remain in the hunt, having beaten Yuliya Beygelzimer and Veronika Kapshay of Ukraine in straight sets in their quarterfinal match.
