PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FL, USA - Both seeds in first round action Monday at The MPS Group Championships advanced in straight sets, including No.3 seed and wildcard entrant Dominika Cibulkova, who disposed of Edina Gallovits, 62 62. The tournament is being played for the first time in Ponte Vedra Beach after moving from Amelia Island.
Cibulkova, a runner-up at this event last year to Maria Sharapova, is seeking her first career Sony Ericsson WTA Tour title. If she wins her next match, the Slovak could face No.6 seed Peng Shuai in the quarters and No.2 seed Caroline Wozniacki in the semis. Also advancing in the bottom half of the draw was Patricia Mayr, who edged Ayumi Morita, 63 26 63
In the top half of the 32-player draw, 14-year-old American wildcard entrant Madison Keys rallied from 5-2 down in the first set of her Tour debut to defeat Alla Kudryavtseva, 75 64. Keys will face No.1 seed Nadia Petrova in the second round if Petrova wins her match Tuesday.
No.7 seed Alona Bondarenko took down Sania Mirza, 64 63, to set up a match-up with her sister, Kateryna, who defeated Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, 76(2) 62. Kateryna has a 3-2 edge in the career series between the sisters, including a win at this event in 2005.
Also Monday, Marion Bartoli, Mariya Koryttseva, Anastasia Rodionova and Anastasija Sevastova all won qualifying matches to reach the main draw. Bartoli wasn't originally entered in this tournament, and was too late for a main draw wildcard, but was happy to accept a wildcard into the qualifying draw.
In addition to Petrova, Wozniacki and Peng, other seeds in action Tuesday are No.4 seed Patty Schnyder, No.5 seed Aleksandra Wozniak and No.8 seed Bethanie Mattek-Sands, who will battle Bartoli.
