PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FL, USA - The quarterfinals are set at The MPS Group Championships, and second-seeded Caroline Wozniacki appears to be in fine form as she pursues her fourth career Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles title a couple of weeks after being named the Tour's Newcomer of the Year for the 2008 season.
The 19-year-old Dane defeated Virginie Razzano, 63 75, on Thursday to set up a clash with wildcard Daniela Hantuchova, who beat eighth-seeded Bethanie Mattek-Sands by the same score, 63 75. Hantuchova, who is also seeking her fourth Tour singles title, has now reached the quarters at this event three times, but never further, also doing it in 2003 and 2007 when the tournament was held at Amelia Island.
On the top half of the draw, fifth-seeded Aleksandra Wozniak edged Sabine Lisicki, 36 76(3) 64, getting revenge after Lisicki eliminated her in the first round of the Australian Open this year. Next up for the Canadian is Tamira Paszek, who put an end to the run of American lucky loser Varvara Lepchenko, 36 63 64. Lepchenko had a surprisingly easy victory over fourth-seeded Patty Schnyder in the first round.
