Monica's Memoirs Set For Release
Monica Seles

Monica Seles will be releasing her new book on April 21, titled Getting a Grip: On My Body, My Mind, My Self. The book, published by Penguin, chronicles the triumphs of Seles during her career while also delving into her struggles with binge eating and depression.

Getting a Grip looks back to Seles' famed leap into the fast-paced world of women's professional tennis at the age of 14, through her win at Roland Garros at the age of 16, where she was the youngest ever to win the Grand Slam event, and on to her attack at the height of her career by a deranged fan in Hamburg, Germany in 1993. The book chronicles the emotional trauma that Seles suffered after the attack, and how her despair led to an eating disorder and depression. Her desolation turned to self-sabotage, as her grueling workouts were damaged by late night binge eating. Seles staged a successful comeback in 1996 that saw her take the singles title at the Australian Open. But shortly thereafter her father and lifelong coach passed away from stomach cancer, and Seles' eating disorder reemerged.

Getting a Grip then delves into her attempts to succeed in a world of younger, nimbler players such as the Williams sisters and Martina Hingis. Seles' struggle led her to come to terms with a changing tennis world and her changing priorities. She is now involved with a great deal of charity work, including the UN's Global Sports for Peace and Development Program Initiative.

The book is to be released just ahead of Seles' induction in the International Tennis Hall of Fame, which will take place in Newport, Rhode Island on July 11. Pre-order the book at Amazon.com.
