FÈS, Morocco - Day 1 of the Grand Prix de SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem yielded a significant upset, as Poland's Marta Domachowska rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the first set and eventually knocked off fourth-seeded Maria Kirilenko, 64 64.
The result was especially surprising, in that Kirilenko was coming off her best performance of the year, a runner-up showing two weeks ago at the Barcelona Ladies Open. Domachowska, who is seeking her first Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles title, will next play the winner of Tuesday's match between Petra Cetkovska and lucky loser Eva Fernández-Brugues.
Also in that quarter of the draw is sixth-seeded Ekaterina Makarova, who is looking for her first Tour title of any kind. The Russian rebounded from a 5-3 deficit in the first set and eventually got past Ioana Raluca Olaru in straight sets, 76(5) 64, on Monday. Olaru, a semifinalist here in 2007, didn't drop a set in her two previous matches with Makarova, both of which were also on clay. Makarova, whose best result so far this year is a round of 16 showing in Miami, will next play the winner of Tuesday's match between Fatima Zahrae El Allami and Akiko Morigami.
Other matches scheduled for Tuesday include No.1 seed Anabel Medina Garrigues, the runner-up here last year to Gisela Dulko, versus Camille Pin; No.2 seed Alisa Kleybanova against qualifier Corinna Dentoni; No.3 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova versus Galina Voskoboeva; No.5 seed Sorana Cirstea against Lourdes Domínguez Lino; No.7 seed Roberta Vinci versus Mariana Duque Marino and No.8 seed Shahar Peer against Aravane Rezai.
