First Round Kicks Off in Charleston
Peng Shuai

CHARLESTON, SC, USA - The Family Circle Cup kicked off on a warm, cloudy Monday in Charleston, with four of the 16 seeds taking to the green clay courts for first round matches at the $1-million tournament.

The first three seeds to take the courts were all winners, with No.10 seed Peng Shuai crushing wildcard Anastasia Pivovarova, 60 62; No.11 seed Alona Bondarenko winning a close first set then rolling over Anne Kremer, 64 60; and No.13 seed Virginie Razzano easing past another wildcard, Mallory Cecil, 61 62. No.14 seed Olga Govortsova wasn't as fortunate, falling to Vania King in a tight three-setter, 67(3) 76(5) 63. King didn't save any match points but Govortsova led 5-3 in the second and was two points away from winning multiple times.

Other winners were Austrians Tamira Paszek and Patricia Mayr, Americans Julie Ditty, Melanie Oudin and Varvara Lepchenko, Paraguay's Rossana de los Ríos, Hungary's Melinda Czink, Russia's Anastasia Rodionova, Slovakia's Lenka Wienerova and Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova. Oudin, Wienerova and Sevastova were qualifiers into the main draw, winning qualifying matches on the weekend.

Tuesday's schedule at the Family Circle Cup will see the first round wrap up and the second round begin. Five Top 8 seeds will make their first appearances of the week, including top seed Elena Dementieva, who faces Ditty in the night match.
