BASTAD, Sweden - The first round of the inaugural Collector Swedish Open Women continued on Tuesday, with the three Top 20 stars playing the event - Caroline Wozniacki, Dominika Cibulkova and Flavia Pennetta - winning.
Wozniacki, seeded No.1 this week and ranked just inside the world's Top 10 at No.9, was the quickest winner of the three, blitzing Sweden's own Sofia Arvidsson in 63 minutes, 61 63. Things got a little tight in the beginning of the second set as Arvidsson stayed with Wozniacki through 3-3, but the Danish teen broke away from there to move into the second round unscathed.
Second seed Cibulkova had a more complicated time, winning by a see-saw 63 26 61 scoreline against another Swede, wildcard Sandra Roma. After splitting the first two sets Cibulkova, who is ranked No.12 in the world, completely ran away with it, taking the third set in just 31 minutes.
The only other seed in action, fourth seed Kaia Kanepi, wasn't so lucky, falling to María José Martínez Sánchez, 61 76(1). Kanepi seemed on her way to a comeback as she broke for 5-4 in the second set and was two points away from pushing it to a third, but the crafty Spaniard, who has been playing the best tennis of her career this year, held on to win in two.
With the first round wrapping up Tuesday, the second round will begin on Wednesday, with the first quarterfinal berths up for grabs.
