PORTOROZ, Slovenia - The Banka Koper Slovenia Open witnessed its first major upset on Tuesday, as No.2 seed Anabel Medina Garrigues suffered a 63 16 75 first round loss to qualifier and birthday girl Vesna Manasieva.

Manasieva, who turned 20 on Tuesday, fittingly collected the first Top 20 scalp of her career over the No.20-ranked Spaniard. After winning the first set the Russian faded, dropping the second set handily and falling behind 5-2 in the third. But she hung tough, even saving a pair of match points at 15-40 serving at 3-5, and eventually earned her best ever win in terms of ranking.

The only other Top 4 seed in action had the opposite experience, as No.4 seed Roberta Vinci - a champion on clay earlier this year in Barcelona, and one of the few players on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour with a penchant for serve-and-volleying - cruised past Slovenian wildcard Nastja Kolar in 45 minutes, 62 60.

Other seeds in action were No.5 seed Sara Errani, who routed Arantxa Rus in 51 minutes, 61 60; No.7 seed Vera Dushevina, who cruised past Tathiana Garbin, 60 63; and No.8 seed Petra Kvitova, who battled past Galina Voskoboeva in the last singles match of the day at the SRC Marina, 46 63 76(4). Kvitova was down 5-1 in the third set and faced a match point in that game before rallying back to win in a third set tie-break.

Stefanie Voegele, Maria Elena Camerin, Alberta Brianti, Camille Pin and qualifier Ksenia Pervak also won their first round matches.

The second round of the Banka Koper Slovenia Open begins on Wednesday, with world No.1 and top seed Dinara Safina highlighting the schedule, facing Pervak on Centre Court. The second round will wrap up Thursday.
