BAD GASTEIN, Austria - There will be a new champion at the Nϋrnberger Gastein Ladies, as last year's winner was taken down during second round play Wednesday at the International-level tournament, which is currently in its third year on the calendar.

No.6 seed Magdalena Rybarikova didn't have an easy time of it, but she outlasted defending champ Pauline Parmentier, 63 46 64. The 20-year-old Slovakian has made a lot of noise on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour this year, having captured her first Tour singles title in Birmingham in addition to making the semis in Hobart and Pattaya City. Also among her results this year are Top 20 wins over Flavia Pennetta, Caroline Wozniacki, Zheng Jie and Li Na.

The other seed to advance on Day 3 was seventh-seeded Anna-Lena Groenefeld, who defeated lucky loser Tereza Hladikova, 63 62. Groenefeld, a semifinalist in Palermo last week, also won their only previous match-up en route to the title at the ITF Women's Circuit Event in Zlin last year. After losing in the round of 16 the last two years here, Groenefeld now has reached the quarters at this event for the first time.

Yaroslava Shvedova upended No.9 seed Shahar Peer in surprisingly easy fashion, 62 61, to reach the final eight of an event for the second straight week, having also gone that far last week in Palermo. Next up for her is wildcard Yvonne Meusburger. The Austrian, whose runner-up showing here in 2007 is her best result to date on Tour, edged Tatjana Malek, 62 26 64. Meusburger was 0-3 in her career against Malek until the French Open this year, but is now 2-3 after topping her in the third round there and the second round here.
