PORTOROZ, Slovenia - World No.1 Dinara Safina steamrolled into the quarterfinals of the Banka Koper Slovenia Open on Wednesday, one of four players to prevail as the first wave of second round matches took the courts.

Safina, the top seed and now a heavy favorite to go all the way to the title as the rest of the Top 4 seeds have all departed, cruised past qualifier and Russian countrywoman Ksenia Pervak in an hour and 17 minutes, 61 62. Eight of the 12 games Safina won went to deuce at least once, but in the end she won points at the right times to seal one of the first quarterfinal spots.

"I knew she wasn't an easy opponent and I was much more focused on the court than in my first match," Safina said. "I go into every match more and more serious. I still think I can improve some shots. She brought a lot of balls back and it wasn't easy to overpower her. I had to work hard to finish the points."

Third seed Kaia Kanepi fell on Monday and second seed Anabel Medina Garrigues lost on Tuesday, and on Wednesday it was fourth seed Roberta Vinci's turn to go, as she was bounced by Rossana de los Ríos, 63 64.

There were upsets in the other two matches on Day 3 of the International-level event, with No.6 seed Lucie Safarova falling to Stefanie Voegele, 75 26 63, and No.7 seed Vera Dushevina losing to Maria Elena Camerin, 46 75 60.

The other four second round matches will all be played Thursday, with Sara Errani the highest seed in action - at No.5 - taking on Klara Zakopalova.
