ISTANBUL, Turkey - No.5 seed Vera Dushevina is now the top seed left at the Istanbul Cup after routing No.3 seed Anabel Medina Garrigues, 61 62, in quarterfinal action on Friday. The 22-year-old Russian, who upped her career record to 2-1 against Medina Garrigues, had lost her three previous Sony Ericsson WTA Tour quarterfinals of 2009 in Pattaya City, Madrid and Eastbourne.
Next up for Dushevina is Timea Bacsinszky, who crushed Urszula Radwanska in 50 minutes, 60 61. Saturday's match will be Bacsinszky's fourth career Tour semifinal, including most recently in Prague two weeks ago, but she's still seeking her first finals appearance. She is 0-2 all-time versus Dushevina.
"I was really happy about that win. It's actually not easy to win, 60 61 - you have to be so focused, and today I focused on every game," the 85th-ranked Bacsinszky said of her win over Radwanska. "I'm in really good shape and it's bringing me a lot of confidence, especially since I didn't play for six months because of my knee. It has been a really tough year for me with injury but I'm really happy to be back on track and I know I'm playing better than my ranking at the moment. I hope I'll be able to return back to my best ranking, then why not even more?"
On the bottom half of the draw, Andrea Petkovic knocked off seventh-seeded Olga Govortsova, 63 63, however, that result was hardly a surprise, considering the German had won both of her previous career matches against Govortsova. Also, Petkovic is arguably one of the hottest players on Tour, having now won eight straight matches and 10 straight sets, going back to last week in Bad Gastein, where she won her first career Tour singles title.
In the semis, Petkovic will face No.8 seed Lucie Hradecka, who edged Marta Domachowska, 61 57 64. A victory for Hradecka would advance her to her second Tour singles final of the year, having been a runner-up in Strasbourg. Hradecka won her only previous career match-up with Petkovic, at the ITF Women's Circuit event in Belfort earlier this year.
