NEW YORK, NY, USA - The Top 8 seeds all made it through the first round but the first of them was toppled as the second round of the doubles draw kicked off on Friday.
Hsieh Su-Wei and Peng Shuai, Sony Ericsson WTA Tour champions at Premier-level tournaments in Sydney and Rome this year and the No.7 seeds at the year's final major, were ousted by American wildcards Alexa Glatch and Carly Gullickson in straight sets, 75 63.
In a pair of minor upsets, Gisela Dulko and Shahar Peer beat No.14 seeds Sania Mirza and Francesca Schiavone while Sorana Cirstea and Caroline Wozniacki beat No.16 seeds Victoria Azarenka and Vera Zvonareva.
No.1 seeds Cara Black and Liezel Huber, No.2 seeds Anabel Medina Garrigues and Virginia Ruano Pascual, No.5 seeds Daniela Hantuchova and Ai Sugiyama, No.6 seeds Nuria Llagostera Vives and María José Martínez Sánchez, No.8 seeds Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Nadia Petrova, No.9 seeds Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Patty Schnyder and No.13 seeds Alisa Kleybanova and Ekaterina Makarova all moved into the third round. Unseeded duo Olga Govortsova and Alla Kudryavtseva joined them.
The remaining five second round matches, including that of No.4 seeds the Williams sisters, take place on Saturday.
