GUANGZHOU, China - The China GDD-Guangzhou International Women's Open experienced its biggest upset of the week as second round play concluded on Thursday.

No.1 seed Anabel Medina Garrigues was bounced by 19-year-old Latvian Anastasija Sevastova, 36 63 61. With her victory over the 23rd-ranked Medina Garrigues, the 95th-ranked Sevastova set up a quarterfinal encounter with eighth-seeded Alberta Brianti. Also on the top half of the draw, Olga Savchuk defeated Hsieh Su-Wei, 64 64, and will next play seventh-seeded Ayumi Morita.

On the bottom half of the draw, No. 3 seed Peng Shuai, runner-up here last year to Vera Zvonareva, handled Chanelle Scheepers, 63 62. She will be seeking her first Tour singles semifinal showing of the year when she faces Alexandra Panova next. Also, Chan Yung-Jan outlasted No.9 seed Maria Elena Camerin, 63 36 76(2), and will play No.5 seed Shahar Peer in the quarters.

Savchuk and Chan will be playing in their first Tour singles quarterfinals of 2009 on Friday, and Sevastova will be competing in the first one of her career.
