LINZ, Austria - Four players - Austria's Tamira Paszek, Romania's Alexandra Dulgheru, Latvia's Liga Dekmeijere and the Czech Republic's Vladimira Uhlirova - took some time out from the Generali Ladies Linz to have the unique experience of making Linzer Torte, the oldest cake in the world.

"This is the first time I've ever baked something like this, so it was a lot of fun!" Dulgheru commented afterwards. "It's nice to be able to do something away from the tennis court. I think I'm going to try to make one of these at home for my mother and show her what I've learnt aside from tennis while I'm away!"

"I've always enjoyed baking. I used to do quite a bit of it when I was growing up with my mother," Uhlirova said. "This has been really good fun. I've ended up with flour all over my face, but I think that's a sign I've been working hard!"

"I've only ever made a Linzer Torte once before and that was when I made my debut here when I was 14. I think I've definitely done a better job this time!" Paszek said. "It's a shame that I'm injured and can't play here, but I'm very proud that we have a tournament here and all the girls have a chance to experience some of the Austrian culture and learn a bit more about my country."

First made in 1696, Linzer Torte was so expensive to make that only kings and bishops could afford it. It was originally made with almonds, but now hazelnuts make up 30% of the cake. The bakery in Linz that the players visited opened in 1929 and is a family run business. Kommerzialrat Leo Jindrak I was the original owner and has since passed the ownership of the bakery onto Leo II, its current owner Leo III (who taught the players) and he had a son - Leo IV - who is learning the family trade. The bakery makes 80,000 Linzer Tortes a year.
