MELBOURNE, Australia - As the Australian Open doubles event winds down with the Williams sisters attempting a title defense, it seems an appropriate time to take a look back at the rich history of the year's first major, including some interesting facts, statistics and tidbits. Of course, a familiar face leads the way.

Most Aussie Open Doubles Titles in Open Era (Teams)
Martina Navratilova/Pam Shriver: 7
Serena Williams/Venus Williams: 3
Notes: Navratilova and Shriver's seven titles were consecutive, from 1982-1989, although the event was not held in 1986 ... A team has not won the title in consecutive years since Gigi Fernandez and Natasha Zvereva in 1994 ... Five teams have won two titles ...  Margaret Court and Evonne Goolagong recorded the only double bagel in Australian Open doubles final history, over Joy Emerson and Lesley Hunt in 1971.

Most Aussie Open Doubles Titles in Open Era (Individuals)
Martina Navratilova: 8
Pam Shriver: 7
Evonne Goolagong: 5
Margaret Court: 4
Helen Gourlay: 4
Martina Hingis: 4
Notes: Court also won four Australian Open doubles titles prior to the Open Era ... Hingis' three consecutive titles from 1997-1999 came alongside three different partners ... Navratilova's only title without Shriver came alongside Betsy Nagelsen in 1980 ... Lindsay Davenport finished runner-up an Open Era record six times (including four straight years from 1996-1999) with four different partners, but never won the event.

Aussie Open Singles/Doubles Titlist in Same Year
Margaret Court: 4 (1969, 1970, 1971, 1973)
Evonne Goolagong: 4 (1974, 1975, 1976, 1977)
Martina Hingis: 3 (1997, 1998, 1999)
Martina Navratilova: 2 (1983, 1985)
Serena Williams: 2 (2003, 2009)
Notes: Court is the only player to win all three events in the same year, as she also captured the mixed doubles in 1969.
