PARIS, France - Patty Schnyder made a successful return to the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour on Monday after missing the Australian season with a foot injury. The former Top 10 player pulled off the first upset of the Premier-level event, dispatching No.7 seed Virginie Razzano in straight sets.

Schnyder, once ranked No.7 but now No.44, sat out the Australian Open with left foot tendonitis; it was the first Grand Slam she missed since the 1996 US Open, snapping a 52-long streak. She returned to action in zonal Fed Cup play over the weekend and this week makes her Tour return in Paris.

Taking on the No.24-ranked Razzano, against whom she had lost her last two meetings, Schnyder was strong out of the gates, building a 63 42 lead and, despite seeing that lead dissipate, she closed it out, 63 76(3).

"It's definitely great I could start with a win. I had some matches last week for the Fed Cup, which helped me, but now it's on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour again," said Schnyder, now 3-2 lifetime against Razzano. "It's a big stadium and it was a Top 30 player, so I'm really happy I could win in two sets."

"I played very well today but Patty was a little better," Razzano said. "She played incredible tennis today. I couldn't do anything more to beat her, and I said congrats to her. When I'm playing well and can't do anything more and lose, I say bravo. I hope she can go far here. For me it's a disappointment to have lost today, but it's okay. I can continue and concentrate on Dubai."

The other two seeds in action were both successful, No.4 seed Francesca Schiavone blanking qualifier Vesna Manasieva in 58 minutes, 60 60, and No.6 seed Shahar Peer dismissing Alizé Cornet, 64 61.

Alisa Kleybanova, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Lucie Safarova, Andrea Petkovic, Melanie Oudin, Tathiana Garbin and Karolina Sprem also won.
