Hingis To Play WTT

NEW YORK, NY, USA - She has ruled out a return to the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour - for now - but former world No.1 Martina Hingis is once again set to strut her stuff on the tennis stage, representing the New York Buzz in the co-ed World TeamTennis Pro League this July.

Hingis won't be the only star attraction in the Billie Jean King-founded competition's 35th year. Lindsay Davenport is due to play at least eight matches for the St Louis Aces and Venus Williams joins her sister Serena Williams on the Washington Kastles team.

Venus will play one match at home in the nation's capital and road matches in Philadelphia and St Louis. Serena will play one match at home iand road matches against the New York Sportimes, Philadelphia Freedoms and New York Buzz - meaning a showdown with Hingis is on the cards.

Among other notable WTT moves, the New York Sportimes has secured Kim Clijsters, who played for the St Louis Aces as part of preparations for her return to the Tour last August. Maria Sharapova has signed up to play a match for the Newport Beach Breakers, while fellow Russian Anna Kournikova - an eight-year veteran of WTT - joins Davenport for a third year in the St Louis Aces.

Between them, this year's WTT line-up boasts more than 575 professional tour singles and doubles titles, including 87 Grand Slam championships. Male stars taking part include Andy Roddick (Philadelphia Freedoms), James Blake (Boston Lobsters) and John McEnroe (New York Sportimes).

Hingis, who won five singles Grand Slam titles as well as nine in doubles and one in mixed, has committed to playing all 14 dates for the New York Buzz. Now 29, she recently told Associated Press that "there's a spark" of interest in making a full comeback, but was put off by the travel that would be required.

"Of course it makes you think," said Hingis of the exploits of Clijsters and Justine Henin. "Tennis was all my life... It would be sad if it didn't make me think, don't you think?"

In December the Swiss Miss had a lucky escape when she came off her horse during the Gucci Masters International Jumping Competition outside Paris.
