In the last match of the day, Alicia Molik - who labored through three-setters in both of her qualifying matches - upset one of the Australian Open's breakout performers, Zheng Jie. Seeded No.16, Zheng fell to the ex-Top 10 player, who returned to the Tour last fall after a year in retirement, 63 46 62.

Molik's win over the No.20-ranked Zheng was her first win over a Top 20 player since she beat Anna-Lena Groenefeld at this same event three years ago.

The other two seeds in action, No.11 seed Marion Bartoli and No.14 seed Francesca Schiavone, both won their openers in straight sets.

The first round continues and the second round begins on Monday, with the highest seed in action being No.7 seed Agnieszka Radwanska. Caroline Wozniacki, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Venus Williams and Victoria Azarenka, the Top 4 seeds, will all begin their title quests on Tuesday.
