BOGOTÁ, Colombia - A day after seeds went 4 for 4 at the XVIII Copa BBVA Colsanitas, two of the ones in action went down, including second-seeded Spaniard Carla Suárez Navarro.
Nineteen-year-old qualifier Kristina Antoniychuk rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the second set to top Suárez Navarro, 61 64. The other surprise of the day saw wildcard Catalina Castaño get past No.4 seed Polona Hercog, 75 62. Interestingly enough, Castaño just lost to Hercog last week in an ITF Pro Circuit event in Cali, making her 0 for 2 all-time against the Slovenian, until Tuesday.
Two seeds fared better on Tuesday, including top seed and last year's runner-up, Gisela Dulko. After a slow start in which she trailed 4-1 in the first set, the Argentine rallied to defeat Mathilde Johansson, 64 64, raising her career record to 2-0 against the Frenchwoman, with her other victory also coming here in last year's quarters. Also, seventh-seeded Klara Zakopalova came back to beat Lauren Albanese, 46 76(2) 61, after losing the first set and trailing 4-1 in the second set.
Other winners Tuesday were Rossana de los Ríos, Patricia Mayr, Pauline Parmentier, Mariya Koryttseva, Mariana Duque Marino and Sílvia Soler Espinosa.
Wednesday's second round action will be highlighted by Dulko against Edina Gallovits and No.3 seed Sara Errani versus Soler Espinosa.
