Oudin Opens With Win

MEMPHIS, TN, USA - A day after top seed Maria Sharapova lost just two games in her opening match at the Cellular South Cup, Melanie Oudin almost did the same, cruising past Alexa Glatch in her opener, 62 61.

Oudin, the second seed, made her first Sony Ericsson WTA Tour semifinal in Paris last week and on Tuesday night continued that momentum in Memphis, needing just 76 minutes to beat her countrywoman, out-foxing her with her trademark mix of retrieving, percentage plays and big forehands.

"I was happy with how the match went tonight," Oudin said afterwards. "I played well and did what I needed to do. Being the No.2 seed, everyone is gunning for me, so I had to be ready. The crowd was great too. I really enjoyed the match."

This is Oudin's second main draw appearance in Memphis. Playing as a wildcard last year, the Georgia native made the second round.

It was a mixed bag for the other seeds, with No.4 seed Lucie Hradecka falling to Karolina Sprem, 64 64, and No.8 seed Elena Baltacha making it past Renata Voracova, 75 61. Lilia Osterloh and Nicole Vaidisova also won.
