ACAPULCO, México - Four seeds took the court for first round action at the Abierto Mexicano TELCEL presentado por HSBC on Monday but only three survived, as Sorana Cirstea fell quietly to Canada's Sharon Fichman.

Cirstea, who held the No.4 seed, was completely out of sorts during the 63-minute oddity, holding serve twice in the first set but losing it five times, and never even getting a break point on Fichman's delivery. The 19-year-old Fichman, one of Canada's brightest future hopes, is known for her tenacious, backboard groundstrokes and feistiness - against Cirstea, it definitely worked.

No.2 seed Agnes Szavay, No.6 seed Sara Errani and No.8 seed Polona Hercog all advanced. The only one to go to three sets was Szavay, who lost the first set but stormed back to beat Sandra Zahlavova, 26 61 63.

Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, Alizé Cornet and Renata Voracova also earned first round wins on Day 1 of main draw play.

Lucie Hradecka, Greta Arn, Catalina Castaño and Laura Pous Tio secured berths in the main draw with qualifying wins.

Top seed and defending champion Venus Williams begins her week Tuesday against Mathilde Johansson. Read Venus' player blog right now!
