ACAPULCO, México - Two wins, four sets. Venus Williams continued to win in Acapulco without losing a set, reaching the quarterfinals of the $220,000 Abierto Mexicano TELCEL with a 64 64 victory over Kaia Kanepi.

Williams, the No.1 seed and defending champion here, won the first four games and had three points for a 5-0 lead before Kanepi found the range that saw her ranked in the Top 20 last year, winning four games in a row and, after eventually losing that first set, twice going up a break in the second set. But Williams held on every time, closing her out in straight sets in an hour and 46 minutes.

"I expect every match to be challenging, especially on this surface. But I was really focused," Williams said. "I had a lead at the start but let it go. I was trying to win the match in two sets and I did that, so I'm happy. There were times I was down a break and I was always trying to get back even."

The No.2 and No.3 seeds had near-identical wins. Second seed Agnes Szavay was down 5-2 in the first set before rolling to a 75 61 victory over Renata Voracova; third seed Gisela Dulko saved five set points down 5-3 in the first set before recording a 75 61 win over Barbora Zahlavova Strycova. No.5 seed Carla Suárez Navarro and No.8 seed Polona Hercog also moved on.

There were two upsets, as Edina Gallovits toppled No.6 seed Sara Errani, 64 57 64, and qualifier Laura Pous Tio beat No.7 seed Roberta Vinci, 63 62. In the only other match, Canada's Sharon Fichman beat Mariya Koryttseva, 62 63.
