Oudin, ranked No.41 in the world - America's No.3 player, with the Williams sisters both in the Top 5 - started quickly, capturing the first set in 34 minutes. But she was broken in a four deuce game in the fourth game of the second set and Vinci took over from there, taking that middle set and rolling in the third.
The highest-ranked player to advance on Day 2 of the BNP Paribas Open was Carla Suárez Navarro, ranked No.42. The Spaniard won a streaky match against Alizé Cornet, 64 16 62, and her reward is a second round date with top seed Svetlana Kuznetsova. Kuznetsova won their only previous match easily.

In another notable match-up between former Top 20 players, Sybille Bammer edged Katarina Srebotnik, 36 75 61, despite Srebotnik serving for the match at 63 54. Bammer's reward is a second round clash with No.3 seed Victoria Azarenka, who has won their last three meetings in straight sets.
Other winners included Anastasija Sevastova, who just last week made a surprise run to her first Sony Ericsson WTA Tour semifinal in Monterrey, upsetting Jelena Jankovic - her first Top 10 win - along the way.
