First Round Kicks Off

MIAMI, FL, USA - The first round of the Sony Ericsson Open kicked off on Tuesday, with a dozen players booking their spots in the second round opposite seeded players, all 32 of whom received first round byes.

Unfortunately for the home crowd, Americans went 0-2 on Day 1 of the $4.5-million tournament. Vania King suffered a 64 16 63 loss to Peng Shuai of China, while Ashley Harkleroad - playing her first tournament back after time off becoming a mother - lost to Alicia Molik of Australia, 61 61.

There were a few noteworthy comebacks as well. The player living most on the edge was Yaroslava Shvedova, who hung tough to dispatch wildcard Ajla Tomljanovic, 67(1) 76(3) 75, saving four match points while down 5-4 in the third set. And although she didn't have to save any match points, Sorana Cirstea did show her mettle in the second set of her match against Michelle Larcher de Brito, saving six set points in the second set of a 75 76(9) victory.

Top 50 players Gisela Dulko, Lucie Safarova and Alexandra Dulgheru were also among the winners on Day 1 of the tournament.
