PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FL, USA - It was a successful day for the seeds at the MPS Group Championships on Monday, as Dominika Cibulkova, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Aleksandra Wozniak all won their opening matches.

Cibulkova and Pavlyuchenkova, seeded No.3 and No.5, respectively, were the first to advance, and in much different fashion. Cibulkova defeated Melinda Czink in straight sets, 61 64, while Pavlyuchenkova battled for three hours to get past countrywoman Ekaterina Makarova, 75 57 64. The first set alone in that one lasted an hour and 13 minutes. Wozniak, the No.6 seed, moved through to the second round more quickly, beating Sloane Stephens, 64 63.

"It was a tough match today," Wozniak said. "She had a big forehand and we had a lot of long rallies, I just tried to keep the pressure on and move her around, and I was able to win in the end so I'm pretty happy."

Wozniak, Canada's No.1 player, made it all the way to the title match at this tournament last year before falling to good friend Caroline Wozniacki.

"The start of this year was a struggle for me. I'm trying to get my confidence back, but I'm playing on my favorite surface now and I did well here last year," Wozniak added. "I hope to do well again. I'm taking it one match at a time."

Alla Kudryavtseva and Sofia Arvidsson also recorded first round wins.

Bethanie Mattek-Sands, Sesil Karatantcheva, Anna Tatishvili and Sophie Ferguson secured main draw spots with wins in the final round of qualifying.

Wozniacki, the No.1 seed this year, begins her title defense on Tuesday against talented Sony Ericsson WTA Tour veteran Patty Schnyder.
