FÈS, Morocco - In the most dramatic of the three first round main draw matches played Monday at the Grand Prix de SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem, Olga Savchuk got revenge for a recent defeat in dramatic fashion.

The Ukrainian Savchuk had not taken a set off Patricia Mayr in two previous meetings, including just last month in Monterrey, but on Monday she came out ahead, 64 76(0). She rallied from 4-1 down in the first set and was up 5-1 in the second before losing five straight games and then reeling off 11 straight points in breaking Mayr at love and shutting her out in the tie-break. By advancing to the round of 16, Savchuk has produced her best result so far in 2010.

In the other two main draw matches, No.7 seed Iveta Benesova downed Olivia Rogowska, 60 64, and Ioana Raluca Olaru got past Klara Zakopalova, 64 26 64. Benesova and Olaru both did double duty Monday, as they each were victorious in the first round of doubles as well - Benesova alongside Anabel Medina Garrigues and Olaru with Katie O'Brien.

Also Monday, Simona Halep, Greta Arn, Laura Pous Tio and Claire de Gubernatis secured main draw berths with wins in the final round of qualifying.

A few of the favorites are among those in first round action on Tuesday - No.1 seed Carla Suárez Navarro, No.2 seed Patty Schnyder and No.3 seed and defending champion Medina Garrigues.

Patty is blogging all week from Fès. Read about what she's up to here!
