Ranking Watch: Australian Ascends
Samantha Stosur

Red-hot Australian Samantha Stosur continued to her ascension on the newly released rankings with a new career-high.

Stosur's ranking has steadily progressed in recent years, as she cracked the Top 100 for the first time in 2004, the Top 50 in 2005, the Top 30 in 2006, the Top 20 in 2009 and the Top 10 this March. Now, on the heels of her runner-up showing in Stuttgart, she rose from No.10 to No.8. However, it will be difficult for her to rise even further in the coming weeks, as she had to withdraw from this week's event in Rome with a right arm injury, and she has a lot of points to defend at Roland Garros, where she was a semifinalist last year.

Justine Henin, who beat Stosur in the Stuttgart final for the first title of her comeback, jumped from No.24 to No.19, her first venture into the Top 20 since she returned to the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour in January. Of course, with no points to defend from last year at any event, there is a great chance she will move much higher in the rankings in the coming weeks as she plays on her favorite surface - clay.

Also making noise on the rankings were two players who reached their first career Tour semifinals in Fès and Stuttgart, respectively. Renata Voracova went from No.104 to a career-high of No.94, her Top 100 debut, and Anna Lapushchenkova went from No.138 to No.96 to return to the Top 100 for the first time since she achieved her career-high of No.95 in August 2008.

There was not much movement on the doubles rankings, although after taking the title in Stuttgart alongside Flavia Pennetta, Gisela Dulko rose from No.21 to No.18 to match her career-high and return to the Top 20 for the first time since first reaching that career-high in August 2006. Meanwhile, Pennetta went from No.23 to No.20 to return to the Top 20 for the first time since last July and to become one of five players - one of them being Stosur - ranked in the Top 20 in both singles and doubles.
