Agnes Szavay

BUDAPEST, Hungary - The GDF Suez Grand Prix seems to bring out the best in native Hungarian Agnes Szavay. She had not gone beyond the quarters of a Sony Ericsson WTA Tour event since capturing the title here last year, yet now finds herself in Saturday's semis without having dropped a set all week.

The seventh-seeded Szavay made short work of Alizé Cornet on Friday, 63 61, to set up a showdown with second-seeded Alexandra Dulgheru, who prevailed in a three-setter for the second straight day, 67(1) 62 76(4), over Anastasija Sevastova.

"It was very tough, as Anastasija is a good player," said Dulgheru. "She hits with a lot of depth, changes the rhythm and plays a lot of dropshots."

Dulgheru, who is into a Tour semifinal for the fourth time this year - having fallen in the final four in Barcelona and 's-Hertogenbosch and having gone on to take the title in Warsaw - said an injury almost did her in.

"During the tie-break, I twisted my ankle and in the second set, I just wanted to move a bit to see if it loosens up and if not, I would have quit," she said. "As I was moving, all of a sudden, it cracked and moved back and I was happy I could play afterwards."

On the top half of the draw, Patty Schnyder will take on Zuzana Ondraskova for a spot in the final. The Swiss edged No.8 seed Polona Hercog, 75 16 64. This is the best result she has had since losing to Szavay in last year's final here. Ondraskova edged Anabel Medina Garrigues, 75 16 64, in just under three hours to raise her career record to 3-0 against the Spaniard. This is the furthest the Czech has gone in a Tour event since her runner-up showing in Prague in 2005.
