BAD GASTEIN, Austria - Four singles matches were played at the Nürnberger Gastein Ladies on Wednesday, and after half of the International-level tournament's seeds were wiped out on Tuesday, the two who competed restored order by surviving three-setters.

After dropping the opening set, second-seeded Swiss Timea Bacsinszky rallied to beat Belarusian qualifier Ekaterina Dzehalevich, 46 63 63.

"The way it started, I was already thinking about going home," admitted Bacsinszky, who is through to her second quarterfinal of the season. "It's tough to play at this altitude. But I started to move forward more and be more aggressive, and I think I got the mental part right. I'm really happy with the win."

In the last eight Bacsinszky faces Sandra Zahlavova, who backed up her first round win over her cousin-in-law Barbora Zahlavova Strycova by beating Ukrainian qualifier Lesya Tsurenko, 62 64.

Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova also advanced after Romania's Simona Halep retired due to a right shoulder injury. At the time eighth-seeded Sevastova was leading, 57 61 50.

"I had chances at 5-4 in the first set but I became too passive and stopped moving so well," said Sevastova. "In the second and third sets I was more aggressive and that was better.

"I also knew that she was a bit injured, and that's not so easy to play against," she added. "I just had to focus on my game… it worked well in the end."

Having scraped through her first round match, last year's runner-up, Romania's Ioana Raluca Olaru, wasn't so fortunate today: she fell to Anastasia Pivovarova, 61 26 64. In securing her victory, the 20-year-old Russian recovered three breaks of serve in the decider. She's now into her first Sony Ericsson WTA Tour quarterfinal.

Top seed Andrea Petkovic returns to action on Thursday, for a potentially tricky encounter with Alizé Cornet. Despite the early departure of Sybille Bammer there is still plenty of local interest too, with Austrian wildcard Patricia Mayr due to face seventh seed Tathiana Garbin, and Yvonne Meusburger set to play Lucie Hradecka.

Hradecka and Anabel Medina Garrigues, the No.2 seeds in the doubles, were first to book a spot in the semifinals. They blitzed the less experienced Maria Irigoyen and Melanie Klaffner in straight sets, 63 60.
