No.2 Seeds Triumph

The winning teams in this week's Sony Ericsson WTA Tour events in Portoroz and Bad Gastein had several things in common. Both were the No.2 seeds, did not lose a set all week until the final and won the final in a match tie-break.
At the Banka Koper Slovenia Open, Maria Kondratieva and Vladimira Uhlirova were the victors, edging unseeded Anna Chakvetadze and Marina Erakovic in Saturday's final, 64 26 107. They had a 2-6 career match record together before this week, with their best result having been a quarterfinal showing in Warsaw in May, but now Kondratieva has her first Tour doubles title and Uhlirova her fourth. Uhlirova's most recent title prior to this week also came at Portoroz, as last year she won alongside Julia Goerges.
In Sunday's final at the Nürnberger Gastein Ladies, Lucie Hradecka and Anabel Medina Garrigues got past No.4 seeds Timea Bacsinszky and Tathiana Garbin, 67(2) 61 105. The victory was especially impressive, in that this was Hradecka and Medina Garrigues' first event together and Bacsinszky and Garbin had an 11-match win streak going entering the final and were coming off titles in consecutive weeks, in Budapest and Prague.
Not only was this Hradecka's ninth Tour doubles title, it was her fourth straight in Bad Gastein, having won in 2007 with Renata Voracova and 2008 and 2009 with Andrea Hlavackova. As for Medina Garrigues, she now has 16 Tour doubles titles.
"It was my first time playing with Anabel and I hope we'll play again," said Hradecka, who now has a 15-0 match record in Bad Gastein. "I'm so happy to win here four years in a row. I love being here in Bad Gastein. There's so much to do in the area. It's just a really good tournament."
"I'm really happy to win another title, and I'm very happy for Lucie too," said Medina Garrigues, whose three Tour doubles titles this year have come alongside three different partners. "Lucie is a very good doubles player. She has a lot of power."
