ISTANBUL, Turkey - Defending champion Vera Dushevina and No.6 seed Andrea Petkovic overcame tough three-setters on Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Istanbul Cup. But No.5 seed Tsvetana Pironkova was ousted by Anastasia Rodionova.

Wimbledon semifinalist Pironkova broke the Russian-born Aussie three times, all in the middle set, but Rodionova broke her opponent on six occasions to advance to her third quarterfinal in as many months, 61 36 62.

Earlier, unseeded Russian Elena Vesnina returned superbly to book her place in the quarters with a 63 62 victory over Stefanie Voegele. Vesnina, who arrived in Turkey on a six-match losing streak, won 73% of points off the Swiss player's second serve. But, as in the first round, Dushevina's resolve for a second Istanbul title was sorely tested - this time by Anastasija Sevastova. Dushevina eventually prevailed, 63 67(8) 62.

Sixth-seeded Andrea Petkovic, a semifinalist here last year, was also pushed to the limit by Ekaterina Makarova before winning, 76(5) 57 63. The encounter lasted nearly three hours.

"It was a very tough match," said Petkovic, who converted both her break point opportunities in the decider. "We did not just play long, but also the points were very long, so I'm happy to be free tomorrow. I can have a massage, maybe hit for half an hour or so and just recover for my match on Friday."

In the doubles, top seeds Maria Kondratieva and Vladimira Uhlirova, who won the title at Portoroz last weekend, progressed to the semis with a 63 61 win over Sophie Lefèvre and Klara Zakopalova.

The remaining four singles quarterfinal berths will be decided on Thursday. Top seed Francesca Schiavone faces British No.1 Elena Baltacha, with doubles partners Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Magdalena Rybarikova also due to face off.
