CINCINNATI, OH, USA - Two upsets rocked Cincinnati on a rainy Wednesday, as Elena Dementieva and Francesca Schiavone were both bundled out of the Premier-level tournament in straight sets by young Russian hotshots.

Schiavone, the No.5 seed, was the first of the two to go down, falling to Elena Vesnina routinely, 64 64. It was her fourth loss in five matches since becoming the first Italian ever to win a Grand Slam title at the French Open.

Dementieva, the No.3 seed, had beaten Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova handily in both of their previous meetings but this time Pavlyuchenkova turned the tables, pummeling her countrywoman in an hour and 20 minutes, 61 63.

"That was probably the worst match in a long, long time for me," Dementieva said. "It was very humid the last few days, and I was trying to get ready for these conditions, but it was difficult. That was a bad experience."

"I respect Elena a lot as an athlete. She's a really great player, she's one of the best in Russia," Pavlyuchenkova, the highest ranked teenager on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour and a recent champion in Istanbul, said. "I wasn't the No.3 seed; she was. It helps to come to a tournament after winning the last one."

Vera Zvonareva, the No.6 seed, nearly followed Schiavone and Dementieva home, but rallied from 2-5 in the third set to beat Maria Kirilenko, 75 26 76(2).

"I'm very happy the way I came back," Zvonareva said. "I wasn't thinking about being down, I was trying to think about what I needed to do to beat my opponent. I knew if I came up with a good game, there was a chance I could turn it around. I always believe in myself. I just had to put my mind to it."

The other Top 10 seeds in action on Day 3 had no trouble, with No.2 seed Caroline Wozniacki, No.7 seed Agnieszka Radwanska, No.8 seed Li Na and No.10 seed Maria Sharapova all moving through in straight sets.

Wozniacki, who beat Sybille Bammer, 60 62, next plays No.16 seed Marion Bartoli. Wozniacki is 3-1 in her head-to-head against Bartoli, although Bartoli's win did come in their most recent meeting, last year on clay.

"Marion is playing well. She has been playing well and has been here for a while now, so she's used to the conditions," Wozniacki said. "But I'm a good player too. I felt good out there today and hopefully I can play even better tomorrow."

Sharapova cruised past Andrea Petkovic, 63 61, and next faces Radwanska. Sharapova is 5-1 in her head-to-head against Radwanska, winning the last four in a row - including a 16 62 62 semifinal win two weeks ago in Stanford.

Also moving on were No.11 seed Flavia Pennetta, No.12 seed Yanina Wickmayer, No.13 seed Shahar Peer and Ana Ivanovic, who followed her win over Victoria Azarenka with a 61 75 win over Yaroslava Shvedova.

"I took a lot of confidence from my first match," Ivanovic commented. "I had an awesome practice yesterday too, so I just tried to keep that in mind. I'm really trying to swing through the ball and not push and see what happens."
