Kuznetsova, the No.11 seed at the $2-million tournament, was pushed close by Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova for two sets but ran away with the third for a 75 46 61 victory. Pavlyuchenkova had won nine of her last 10 matches - winning Istanbul and reaching the semifinals of Cincinnati; but Kuznetsova overcame.

"I was struggling on the court, but I'm glad that period is finished," said Kuznetsova, whose title in San Diego was her first time passing the quarters of any Sony Ericsson WTA Tour event since last fall. "Now I'm confident. And I love the atmosphere here, and the city. I like the atmosphere of Canada."
