SINGAPORE, Singapore - At the Beijing Olympics, Russia dominated the podium with Elena Dementieva winning the gold, Dinara Safina the silver and Vera Zvonareva the bronze. And at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore it was another Russian triumph, as Daria Gavrilova got gold.
Gavrilova, 16, was in trouble early on, falling behind 62 21, but she rallied to beat China's Zheng Saisai in the final at the Kallang Tennis Centre, 26 62 60.
"I'm so happy," said Gavrilova, who will rise to No.1 on the junior rankings after the victory. "She was tired in the last two sets and her level dropped. I won today because I was physically strong. It's definitely my biggest win."
"I'm pleased with the medal, but a little dissatisfied as I lost the match," Zheng said. "Coming in I didn't think I'd win a medal though, so I'm happy."
Jana Cepelova of Slovakia also made the podium, winning the bronze.
